Scene #1: Charlotte & Ironboot
Summary: Charlotte, an independent lady captain, tries to persuade Ironboot, her salty pirate fiancee, to go on a voyage to help a mysterious stranger save his village from the Kraken.
CHARLOTTE
Captain, it’s one thing to behave that way in front of me–I’ve become accustomed to it–but to regard a stranger with such hostility, let alone in your own home.
IRONBOOT
Oh, so now it’s me home–my home. And did ya notice him tryin’ ta kiss yer hand at every chance?
CHARLOTTE
I noticed–that he was asking for our help.
(Sighs)
I know you, Edmond. You don’t like to have your stories called into question, let alone your favorite.
IRONBOOT
(Grumbling)
I never said the Kraken was me fav’rite.
CHARLOTTE
But if he is calling it into question, who better to prove him wrong? And what better way to prove once for all who you really are.
IRONBOOT
(Eyeing her skeptically)
And who’d that be?
CHARLOTTE
(Putting her arms around him)
The most courageous, death-defying, monster-slaying pirate to have sailed the seven seas.
IRONBOOT
(Smirking)
Ya still think so?
CHARLOTTE
I do. And in spite of your infuriating ego, your poor table manners, and your love of strong drink–you are still the man I intend to marry.
Scene #2: Fitz & Longy
FITZ
All’s I’m sayin’ is, it’s like he’s changed since we come ashore–like he ain’t a proper pirate no more.
LONGY
He ain’t a pirate, Fitz. He’s retired.
FITZ
Well, so am I–but that don’t mean I’ll stop bein’ a pirate, now does it?
LONGY
Well, the Cap’n ain’t like you an’ I. He’s got his eighty-cut to consider.
FITZ
His what?
LONGY
His eighty-cut. It’s what proper folks call them little things they do ta make ‘em feel better’n the rest of us. All them curtsies an’ how-d’ya-do’s an’ the like.
FITZ
An’ the cap’n wants… ta be like them?
LONGY
I’ll say he does–even got ‘imself one of them long coats with all the buttons.
FITZ
Ooh, I do like them coats with all the buttons.
Scene #3: Abbie & Charlotte
ABBIE
Well, you didn’t exactly fall for him for his social graces.
CHARLOTTE
(Chuckles)
I know. (Sighs)
And I do love him. But on the island, we were… everything was so different. It was all so much easier somehow.
ABBIE
That’s because you were surrounded by pirates.
(Charlotte uncorks a bottle with her teeth)
And some might even say they had a bad influence on you.
CHARLOTTE
(With the cork between her teeth)
You think so? (Abbie grins, takes the cork from Charlotte’s mouth.)
ABBIE
Not that I would ever say that. So long as you don’t take up smoking.
CHARLOTTE
So… I should return that gift from Fitz and Longy.
(Abbie gives her a look)
Do you think I’m making a terrible mistake?
ABBIE
I don’t think you make mistakes, Captain.
(Charlotte looks up at her)
As your first mate, I’m obliged to call them “educated blunders.”
(Charlotte chuckles)
Everything will work out, you’ll see. But even Anthony and I still have to work at it. Or sometimes we have to let things go.
It’s knowing which is which that’s the hard part.
